Weekend Food in Review 06/06/08-06/08/08
We didn’t have anything out of the ordinary this weekend. Mrs. DanGarion had some mouth surgery last Monday, so she has been relegated to a liquid/soft food diet for about 2 weeks. Friday night we had Kentucky Fried Chicken over in Santa Ana near the corner of 17th and Grand (not something we typically go out of the way to eat). Nothing amazing from there, I had one of their Long John Silver combos, everything tasted sort of greasy, but what do you except from fried food? On Saturday I got breakfast at Knowlwood’s in Santa Ana, on 17th. I ordered the corned beef hash with eggs, it was one of the better corned beef hashes I’ve had, they make it from scratch, so there are big chunks of corned beef. I guess I should probably review it someday… For lunch I picked up a Del’s Deal over at Del Taco in Santa Ana, on Grand near the 22 freeway. Then we had a late dinner at Red Robin over in Foothill Ranch, where I had the Prime Rib Dip, it was just OK, I had really hoped they still had their sliders/mini burgers. On Sunday we had breakfast at one of our favorite stops, Arthur’s Coffee Shop in Orange. I had bacon and eggs, along with that I enjoyed a couple of the best biscuits in Orange County, which I smothered with strawberry and bosenberry jam! For quick good service, Arthur’s is one of the best in Orange County, when you are looking for somewhere to enjoy a hearty American breakfast. To finish up the weekend I had Turkey Club sandwich from Togo’s in Orange on Main Street, while my wife enjoyed two scoops of chocolate ice cream from Baskin and Robbins.
See not every day nor weekend is filled with exotic meals at places I’m going to review. Sometimes it’s just filled with run of the mill typical fare that I don’t consider for reviews. This will be one of my weekly columns I’ll try to make on Mondays. If you have any questions about any of the places we visisted just ask me in the comments.
Unofficial Review - Five Guys - L.A. County
- Five Guys Burger
- Five Guys Cajun Fries
Thanks to Nancy over at Fast Food Maven, I found out that a East Coast favorite has started popping up on the West Coast. I had the pleasure to go to Five Guys Burgers and Fries yesterday for a late lunch. The burger was messy but was pretty good. I’d probably put it below In-N-Out Burger but above most other places. The cajun fries were absolutely fantastic. I’ll be going back if I’m ever in the area, fortunately I hear that the franchisee for this area will be opening some in Orange County! It’s worth the stop if you are hanging out in the South Bay area.

OCFB Review - Philly’s Best - Santa Ana
Hi, I recently joined up as a contributor to the Orange County Food Blogs. I thought nothing would be better then to write a review of one of my favorite weekend lunch destinations, Philly’s Best in Santa Ana.

Baskin - Robbins Soft Serve
Yesterday I read on Fast Food Maven that Baskin-Robbins was going to start serving soft serve ice cream and that some Orange County locations were already swirling up cones. Unfortunately for us the Baskin-Robbins located on Tustin Ave. in Orange was not yet selling their swirled goodness. The machine was there but it wasn’t hooked up and running. So we will have to wait to try out their new dessert.

Susiecakes - Newport Beach
This is less of a review and more of just a call out to Susiecakes in Newport Beach. Yesterday I read an article about the explosion of cupcakeries in Orange County on Food Frenzy over at the OC Register. Unfortunately Dolcissimo, the mentioned establishment is closed on Mondays, we had to go elsewhere to get my sweet tooth fix. My wife had to get something at Ulta, so I suggested we head over to the Westcliff Shopping center since Susiecakes was located just across the street. I ordered a Red Velvet cupcake that was absolutely delicious. So I just wanted to mention them here since I thoroughly enjoyed my dessert last night.
